EXCAVATIONS CONDUCTED BY THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL INSTITUTE OF THE WARSAW UNIVERSITY IN PTOLEMAIS, SONDAGE 2001. The article presents the first stage of Polish excavations in Ptolemais, Libya. In part one are described the steps undertaken in order to obtain an archaeological licence allowing to conduct excavations in Ptolemais (Tolmeita). In this chapter a short characteristic of Libyan archaeology is given, and the reasons for the choice of Ptolemais (from among other Libyan sites) are explained. In the second part a characteristic of ancient Ptolemais is presented. Based on earlier publications, the history of the city and its most important architectural complexes are briefly described. The third part comprises an abridged version of the final report prepared at the end of our first season in Ptolemais (December 2001). A detailed version of the final report was submitted to the Libyan Department of Antiquities and is to be published in .Libya Antiqua. The objective of our first campaign (beside logistic reasons) was to select and determine the area for further excavation activities. A 70 m. trench was delimited running diagonally across one the insulae east of the Colonnaded Palace. In external trenches the boundaries of an insula were observed. Between 0,60 and 1,00 m. below ground level the remains of a richly decorated building dating to the Roman period appeared (walls standing in situ covered with coloured plaster, sculpted and painted architectural elements, fragments of frescoes and mosaics). The uncovered objects needed to be treated by a conservator and so works had to be suspended till the next season. The ceramics material dated mainly to the lateroman and Byzantine periods. The above mentioned fragments of mosaics, frescoes and sculpture find parallels dating to the Ilnd and IlIrd century AD. We therefore supposed that we had discovered the remains of a Roman villa , most probably destroyed during the earthquake in 365 AD. This partially uncovered complex was named the "Villa with a View". Our next campaign conducted in April-May 2002 (its results will be published in Libya Antiqua and the next volume of Swiatowit) confirmed most of our hypotheses, allowing us to determine the name of the owner of the villa.
