Abstract

The issue of women and children in military forts has been a topic of debate for the past twenty years. 1 It is risky at best to interpret social life in roman army camps and forts based on archaeological sources alone. Finds of this kind should be evaluated in the broader context of civilians of both sexes in a military environment, both intra and extra muros.
