Abstract

Whil e making a study of German art collections, of which some pieces are at present housed in Polish museums, we came across a collection of 19t h century works of art, little known in existing literature, created by Franz von Rose (1854-1912). Many fine works of art, e.g. a series of sculptures by the Milan artist Adolfo Wildt (1858-1931) decorated the park and palace at Döhlau, destroyed by army activity in 1945, and by post-war neglect on the part of the monuments conservation service. An account of the history of the collection its preliminary description and setting - the magnificent park - is given in an earlier volume of Swiatowit (cf. T. Mikocki, Rzeźby z kolekcji von Rose w Döhlau, I (First Visit at Dylewo), Swiatowit III [n.s.], 2001, fasc. B., p. 167 sq). During an inspection made at Dylewo in 2001, followed by excavation in 2002, (cf. the report wrote by P. Jaworski, M. Muszyńska and K. Paczyńska in this volume of Swiatowit, p. 255) an unusual series of fragmented marble sculptures was recovered.
