Abstract

Często na jego łamach pojawiały się też prace z zakresu archeologii powszechnej.<br>"SWIATOWIT" - A HUNDRED YEAR HISTORY OF THE PERIODICAL. "Światowit", published continually from 1899, is the oldest periodical devoted to prehistoric archaeology. During a hundred years of its existence 42 volumes were released. "Swiatowit" belongs to a very small group of scholarly periodicals published already at the end of the 19th century which witnessed the birth of contemporary science in Poland. The founder of "Swiatowit" was Erazm Majewski (1858-1922), an explorer of very broad interests. This self-taught private scholar was interested in linguistics, ethnography, ethnology, sociology and economy. In all these fields he had considerable achievements. Later on archaeology became the great passion of his life. Dealing with the most distant history of man he tried to integrate biological, anthropological and historical perspectives, which on that stage of science could be of merely declarative character. However, his work helped turning a fascination with antiquity in Poland into modern archeology. Majewski gathered a fine collection of antiquities later turned into Erazm Majewski Archaeological Museum. Some exhibits are now in the State Archaeological Museum and partly in the National Museum in Warsaw. Founding of "Swiatowit" was Erazm Majewski's greatest achievement in the field of archaeology. In Poland under Russian occupation there was no place for any Polish archaeological institutions, so bringing to life such a periodical made it possible to create a specific informal center for studies on prehistoric archaeology and primal culture, Polish and Slavic, but also culture in general. "Swiatowit" was not only a banal periodical containing articles and publications of archaeological materials, but the spiritus movens of archaeological life in Poland. The Erazm Majewski's periodical served as a forum for presenting results of original research and at the same time popularized archaeology in Poland. During Erazm Majewki's life eleven volumes of "Swiatowit" were published. Between the two World Wars volumes XII to XVIII came out as the Annual of Erazm Majewski Archaeological Museum of the Warsaw Science Society. Its editor was Włodzimierz Antoniewicz, a professor of Prehistoric Archaeology at Warsaw University. Because of the same seat and the personal union between the Museum and the institute the periodical became an organ of the two institutions. Pupils and associates of professor Antoniewicz published their work there. The postwar history of "Swiatowit" is very complex. The editors changed as well as the editing committees, the periodical was an organ of various institutions. Starting from 1958 "Swiatowit" was published as an official annual of the Department of Primal and Early Medi-eval Archaeology, later, in 1965 of the Department of Prehistoric and Early Medieval Archaeology and since 1976 of the then established Institute of Archaeology. By that time "Swiatowit" was one of many periodicals published in Poland. Volumes XL from 1998 and especially XLI from 1999 brought a fundamental change to its form. Since then the periodical is divided into two fascicles: A (Mediterranean and Extraeuropean Archaeology) and B (Prehistoric an Medieval Archaeology and Archaeology of Poland).
