Abstract

Zagadnienie kultu zmarłych stanowi przedmiot niesłabnącego zainteresowania archeologów zajmujących się okresem Wieków Ciemnych w Grecji, chociaż sam termin, używany potocznie, nie doczekał się precyzyjnej definicji. Szczególną uwagę badaczy przyciągały dwa zjawiska łączone z kultem zmarłych: narodziny kultu herosów i tzw. kult grobów mykeńskich oraz ich związki z poezją epicką. Zainteresowanie nimi wzmogło się ostatnio dzięki odkryciu słynnego Heroonu z Lefkandi oraz weryfikacji znalezisk datowanych na późną epokę żelaza z mykeńskich grobów komorowych i tolosowych.1 Celem niniejszej pracy jest przedstawienie argumentów, które zdaniem autorki przemawiają za osobnym traktowaniem narodzin kultu herosów i kultu grobów mykeńskich oraz ukazanie szeregu innych, wymagających definicji fenomenów, tworzących złożony i niejednoznaczny obraz kultu zmarłych w Grecji epoki żelaza.<br>THE USURPED PAST - SOME ASPECTS OF THE CULT OF THE DEAD IN IRON AGE GREECE. Different aspects of the Iron Age cult of the dead are subjects of a long lasting debate among the specialists. Two of them seem to be particulary interesting: the origins of the hero cult and the so-called cult of Mycenaean tombs. Both phenomena dated at ca 8th century BC, were traditionally associated with the question of the orgin of the epic poetry. New archaeological discoveries and the verification of an earlier material recognised more forms of the cult of ancestors.These forms, variously defined by archaeologists (ancestors cult, dead cult, heroes cult, heroic burials), seem to go back to the Early Iron Age or even to the end of the Mycenaean period. New interpretations concentrate on their social and economic meaning, highlighting their "usefulness" for particular social groups and/ or political elite. However, almost all of the interpretations stress the chronological and ideological interdependence between the particular phenomena, including the hero cult and the cult of the Mycenaean tombs. The main goal of this paper is to attempt the definition of the specific cults/phenomena and to postulate their rather individual meaning.
